The aim of the Getting into Medical Writing group is to support new EMWA members in smoothly and successfully starting their career path as medical writers.

The GIMW group meets virtually every month.

If you want to share your experience getting your foot in the door with new EMWA members, you can contact Ivana Turek and publish an article in the Getting Your Foot in the Door section of the journal.

If you’re an aspiring medical writer and you want a chance to get feedback on your writing and showcase your writing skills with the community, you can contact Evguenia Alechine and publish your first article in the My First Medical Writing section.

Upcoming events

At the Spring EMWA conference in Valencia, the GIMW group will run a day-long session on Wednesday, May 8 that will include an Introduction to medical writing seminar, invited speakers and many networking opportunities. 22 September 2023

This 3.5-hour session covered the basics, starting with an introduction to medical writing, networking opportunities, how to navigate EMWA and its offerings, and the upcoming Fall conference in November. Aspiring/new medical writers had the chance to network with other medical writers, ask questions, and connect with colleagues.

12 May 2023

We ran a hybrid session entitled "Getting into Medical Writing - Different types of medical writing: Targeting the right audience” at the EMWA Conference in Prague. Medical writing is a vast world of career opportunities. Different types of medical writing require understanding the different audiences that we are writing for. In this session, specialists in the field covered effective ways in which beginner or aspiring medical writers can target the right audience and help develop a successful professional career.

23 September 2022

We offered a fully virtual Getting into Medical Writing open session. In this session, experienced medical writers and EMWA members presented and discussed the vast career path of medical writing and how EMWA can help you achieve your professional goals in this rewarding career path.This 3-hour session covered the basics, starting with an introduction to medical writing, networking opportunities, how to navigate EMWA and its offerings, and we looked ahead to the autumn conference in Riga, November 2022.

9 June 2022

We ran a joint GIMW and PV SIG Meet & Share entitled "Demystifying pharmacovigilance writing for new and aspiring medical writers”. We discussed: Introduction to pharmacovigilance (PV) writing, how to get a PV writing role as a fresh graduate, experience sharing from aspiring, new, and experienced PV writers, and more.
