Candidate statement for the position of EMWA President-Elect

Dear EMWA

I am writing to apply for the position of President-Elect of the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA). I have carefully reviewed the job description and believe that my qualifications and experience make me a strong candidate for this role.

With a background in academic research publishing, I have been actively involved in medical publications for over 30 years and have a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by medical writers and publication professionals.

I am a former Global Director with Springer Nature and, since 2017, have worked as an independent publishing consultant. Throughout my career, I have demonstrated strong leadership and communication skills, and a commitment to advancing publishing and medical communications.

I am an enthusiastic and proactive supporter of EMWA as demonstrated by the following:

  • Attendance of two Spring Conferences in the past 3 years.
  • Participation in six EMWA conferences since 2016, either as a presenter, workshop leader, moderator, or chair.
  • Serving as a supporting member of the Medical Communications Special Interest Group from its establishment in 2019 and a co-lead on its AI Working Group.
  • Contribution of two articles to EMWA’s journal, Medical Writing.
  • Co-Guest Editor for a special issue on open access.

Between 2014 and 2017, I served as Secretary and Board of Trustees Member for the International Society of Medical Publication Professionals. This gave me experience of an executive committee role that was responsible for financial governance, membership growth, conference organisation and management, and the development of strategic partnerships.

I am particularly keen to contribute to EMWA's mission of promoting the medical communication profession and impacting the industry positively. I am confident that my expertise and passion for medical publications will enable me to effectively support the President in their responsibilities, as well as contribute to the overall success of EMWA.

I will work collaboratively with the Executive Committee and other stakeholders to drive the organization forward and to ensure its continued growth and influence. I am committed to upholding EMWA's values and fulfilling the responsibilities outlined in the job description.

I look forward to the possibility of serving EMWA in this capacity and contributing to its continued excellence.

Slávka Baróniková, MSc, PhD

Candidate statement for the position of EMWA Conference Director

I am a clinical pharmacist with PhD in pharmacognosy. Over a decade, I worked in the academic world - isolating and testing active anti-cancer and anti-HIV compounds from medicinal plants, as well as educating students. In 2003, I moved to the pharmaceutical industry, mainly working in clinical research and later in the scientific communication field.  I joined EMWA in 2006, and since the beginning, I have very much appreciated the welcoming and sharing culture of EMWA members, the diverse, multicultural environment and the make-it-happen attitude. As of 2011, I have also been an active member of the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP).

Ten years ago, my journey as the EMWA Conference Director had begun. I enjoy organizing our conferences, which are now virtual (Autumn) and hybrid (Spring) conferences, allowing more EMWA members to attend these events. With the conference team, I am also organizing (one-day and mini-) symposia and seminars addressing the hottest topics in our profession. Moreover, some of you have already experienced my short Morning Yoga sessions during Spring conferences.

It is very inspiring to work with all our EMWA volunteers, symposia moderators and presenters, as well as seminar leaders, on the exciting program for EMWA members.
