Plain language summaries of publications (PLSPs) help to democratize scientific knowledge. These standalone summaries of original research articles are written in an easy-to-understand language and are published open access, making them accessible to a diverse readership. Despite these benefits and increasing support of pharma companies, healthcare professionals and patient advocates for PLSPs, only three publishers to date offer this article type in at least some of their journals.
