Introduction To Medical Writing
Who it is for
This session is aimed at those considering a career in medical writing. It is open to conference delegates and members of the general public. It will also be interesting to those who have recently joined the profession who would like to know more.
What it covers
In addition to giving a presentation covering all aspects of medical writing, the seminar leader will act as a facilitator to optimise exchange of experience between participants, as well as providing insight based on her expertise in this area.
The aim is to provide information on the following:
• Definition of medical writing and its different categories
• Role of the medical writer throughout the life-cycle of a pharmaceutical product
• Explanation of the different types of documents that we write, with more detailed information on some of the most common (e.g. clinical study protocols and reports, investigator brochures, CTDs, manuscripts, posters)
• Finding a job as a medical writer (qualities and qualifications required), types of companies that employ medical writers, recruitment process, working as a freelancer
• Training and networking for medical writers
Sarah is Vice President of Global Medical Writing at Veristat, where she provides strategic oversight of medical writing activities supporting global drug development programs.
A neuroscientist by training, Sarah began her career as a medical writer in 2006 and has over two decades of experience across consultancy, CRO, and medical communications settings. Her work has focused on regulatory and clinical documentation supporting development from early clinical phases through regulatory submissions and post-marketing activities.
Before joining Veristat in 2023, Sarah held senior leadership roles at Scinopsis, including Director of Medical Writing and Chief Operating Officer. Earlier in her career, she worked in medical communications agencies supporting global pharmaceutical clients.
Sarah serves as Membership Officer on EMWA’s Executive Committee and is co-chair of EMWA’s Getting into Medical Writing initiative. She is passionate about encouraging and supporting professionals entering the field.
She holds a PhD in Neuropharmacology from the University of London and is based in the South of France.

Registration fee first
The conference registration fee (€50) must be in your basket before any session can be added. It is one off and covers the opening session and the plenary.
Terms and conditions
Changes to registration
Changes may be made to workshop or seminar choices after booking (that is, a cancellation of one workshop or seminar choice and replacement by another), for an administrative fee of €27, plus any difference in price between the choice of workshops or seminars. Workshops, seminars and lunchtime sponsored sessions may be added to your original registration (subject to availability) at any time, without an administrative fee by contacting info@emwa.org. All changes are subject to availability.
Cancellation of attendance
If you wish to cancel your attendance at the conference, a refund, minus an administration fee of €162, will be made provided your cancellation is made in writing to EMWA head office before 20 October 2026. No refunds will be made after this date.
Payments
Invoices must be settled by bank transfer in Euro, or paid by card through Stripe. All fees are payable in advance. Full payment is due by 30 October 2026. If payment has not been received, EMWA reserves the right to request payment and cancel registration.
