From Scientific Accuracy to Public Understanding The Evolving Role of Medical Writers in an Age of Health Literacy, Misinformation and Artificial Intelligence

What it covers
Scientific accuracy is fundamental to medical writing, yet accuracy alone does not always lead to public understanding. Despite unprecedented access to scientific information, misinformation continues to spread, vaccine confidence continues to fluctuate, health inequalities persist and many patients still struggle to understand healthcare information intended to support informed decisions.
This interactive workshop explores why the communication gap remains and examines the evolving role of the medical writer beyond scientific accuracy. Using vaccine communication as a central case study, participants will examine how terminology, health literacy, cognitive overload, emotion, culture, trust and lived experience influence how scientific information is understood, interpreted and acted upon.
Rather than focusing solely on writing techniques, the session redefines the medical writer as an evidence interpreter, critical thinker and trusted communicator whose responsibility extends beyond producing accurate documents to facilitating meaningful understanding across diverse audiences.
The workshop will also consider how modern communication environments, including artificial intelligence, search engines, patient portals, digital health technologies and social media, are changing the way scientific information is created, discovered and interpreted. Participants will explore where technology can enhance communication while recognising the continuing importance of human judgement, ethical decision making and audience awareness.
Through discussion, real world case studies and practical exercises, attendees will develop strategies for communicating evidence responsibly in an increasingly complex information landscape.

Registration fee first
The conference registration fee (€50) must be in your basket before any session can be added. It is one off and covers the opening session and the plenary.
Terms and conditions
Changes to registration
Changes may be made to workshop or seminar choices after booking (that is, a cancellation of one workshop or seminar choice and replacement by another), for an administrative fee of €27, plus any difference in price between the choice of workshops or seminars. Workshops, seminars and lunchtime sponsored sessions may be added to your original registration (subject to availability) at any time, without an administrative fee by contacting info@emwa.org. All changes are subject to availability.
Cancellation of attendance
If you wish to cancel your attendance at the conference, a refund, minus an administration fee of €162, will be made provided your cancellation is made in writing to EMWA head office before 20 October 2026. No refunds will be made after this date.
Payments
Invoices must be settled by bank transfer in Euro, or paid by card through Stripe. All fees are payable in advance. Full payment is due by 30 October 2026. If payment has not been received, EMWA reserves the right to request payment and cancel registration.
