What is EMWA?

EMWA offers professional development, expert-led training, networking opportunities, and up-to-date industry knowledge for medical communicators worldwide.
Who can become a member?
Anyone with an interest in medical writing and communication may join. This includes professionals working in pharmaceutical companies, CROs, academia, or as freelancers. Student membership is also available for those in full-time education (or within 12 months of leaving). Corporate membership is open to organisations with at least 3 employees.
How do I join EMWA or renew my membership?

Can I join EMWA if I don’t live in Europe?
Yes! EMWA is open to global members. Many workshops and events are offered virtually to accommodate international participants.
What are the benefits of joining EMWA?

How long does membership last?

What are the membership levels and fees?

What is the EMWA Professional Development Programme (EPDP)?
The EPDP is a structured training programme offered through workshops at EMWA’s two annual conferences. It allows members to develop skills in regulatory writing, medical communications, and other areas. The EPDP also coordinates monthly webinars designed to help members develop skills and keep up to date with new or rapidly developing areas. The programme also offers 2 levels of certificates of achievement – foundation or advanced.
What types of certificates does EMWA offer?
Certificates are earned through the EMWA EPDP, which offers structured learning across key areas of medical writing. Certificates include Foundation and Advanced Certificates in Medical Writing.
How can I earn an EMWA certificate?
You earn a certificate by completing the required number of credits, which can be accumulated through participation and successful completion of EPDP workshops. These are offered at EMWA’s Spring and Autumn conferences. You can track your progress via your member profile.
Can I volunteer with EMWA?
Absolutely! EMWA offers a variety of volunteer opportunities – from event planning and journal contributions to supporting special interest groups and educational content. It’s a great way to build skills, expand your network, and give back to the medical writing community.
How does the Freelance Directory work?
Members can apply for a listing in the directory for €90 per year (pro-rated in the first year). This helps freelancers promote their services and connect with potential clients.
What is a SIG?
A SIG, or Special Interest Group, is a member-led community within EMWA focused on specific topics such as regulatory writing, medical devices, medical communications, and communicating with the public, to name just a few. SIGs offer a platform for deeper discussion, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among members with shared professional interests.
What is a LEG?
A LEG, or Local EMWA Group, is a regionally based group that brings EMWA members together for informal networking, knowledge exchange, and professional support. LEGs help foster local connections and keep members engaged between conferences.
