Patient-centred submissions through expert medical writing

Authors: Shadaab Ayub

Patient-focused drug development has become a central expectation in modern regulatory science, with agencies (e.g., FDA, EMA) increasingly requiring evidence that reflects patients’ real-world needs, priorities, and lived experiences. This article discusses the regulatory shift toward patient focused evidence and examines its impact on the broadening scope of the medical writer’s role. Beyond traditional clinical outcomes, regulators now emphasise patient-reported outcomes, preference data, and real-world evidence to inform endpoint selection, study design, and benefit-risk assessments. This shift has expanded the medical writer’s role from documenting scientific results to strategically integrating patient experience data into regulatory documents. Medical writers now serve as content strategists, connecting scientific evidence with patients’ lived experiences. Incorporation of patient priorities strengthens the scientific narrative and improves submission success rates. Digital biomarkers, AI-enabled tools, and patient co-authorship will further advance patient-centered evidence. Medical writers will remain essential in shaping clear, relevant, and impactful regulatory communication.
