Medical writers and freelancing: Is the grass really greener on the other side?

Authors: Diana Ribeiro

This article explores the realities and myths surrounding freelancing as a medical writer, offering practical guidance for aspiring and established professionals. It highlights the importance of actively seeking work through specialisation, building networks via platforms such as LinkedIn and conferences, and employing inbound and outbound marketing strategies to secure a steady workflow. We then go into a discussion of financial aspects, including determining rates, invoicing practices, tax management, and handling variable income for long-term viability.
The article also addresses the perceived freedom of freelancing with its heightened responsibilities, such as adapting to multiple clients, self-managing schedules, deadlines, insurance, and education, while addressing isolation through community-building options like co-working spaces and peer interactions. It underscores the need to balance “working in” the business (core writing tasks) with “working on” it (administrative duties).

Freelancing provides autonomy and flexibility but requires strategic action in networking, finances, and self-discipline to enable resilient and fulfilling careers through realistic planning and supportive networks.
