Article title: Health literacy and patient-centred communication
Author: Rita Martins

Health literacy is the cornerstone of patient-centred care, yet many struggle to navigate complex medical information. Older adults, managing chronic conditions, face unique challenges with understanding medication instructions and Patient Information Leaflets (PILs). Plain language and tailored resources can bridge this gap, empowering patients to make informed decisions and improving medication adherence. However, barriers like paywalls on resources like the ISO Plain Language Standard contradict accessibility goals. By advocating for open access and prioritising clarity, medical writers and healthcare professionals can transform communication, fostering equity and better health outcomes for all. Clear communication is not optional – it’s essential.
