Five “translation” strategies to adapt technical content for lay audiences

Writing for lay audiences requires language that is understandable by readers without expertise in the subject matter at hand. This means carefully selecting, organising, wording, and supporting content, focusing on conveying relevant points in a straightforward and engaging manner. Applying the principles of plain language can help writers achieve these goals. An important point is that plain language principles apply to all informative writing, whether readers possess specialist knowledge or not. Readers at all levels of expertise welcome and deserve clarity. The goal of this article is to present strategies for translating content originally created for specialists using the principles of plain language.
