Freelance Special Interest Group

The Freelance Special Interest Group (FSIG) was founded in 2025, it derives from the Freelance Business Group which existed within EMWA for many years. It provides information and values for all freelance EMWA members.

FSIG objectives

  • To provide a forum for EMWA members to discuss and share information about freelance medical writing/editing and translation.
  • To act as a resource and support group for medical writers of any speciality interested in getting into this field.
  • To increase EMWA’s educational offerings relevant to this field.

Organisation

Co-chairs: Beate Jänsch, Heather Mason

FSIG Core members: Allison Kirsop, Carolina Rojido, Sara Rubio

MEW Freelance Section Editor: Allison Kirsop

FSIG members: All EMWA members are welcome to express their interest in becoming FSIG members.

Regular activities

The FSIG currently meets every three months for a Meet ‘n’ Share session on a Monday to discuss ongoing projects and current topics of interest.

Our planned activities throughout the year include:

  • Freelance-related sessions (formerly known as FBF (Freelance Business Forum)) at every EMWA conference (F2F & virtual).
  • Administrating the EMWA Freelance LinkedIn group.
  • Hosting discussions on topics of interest to freelancers (“Meet ‘n’ Share”, networking sessions, and learning lunches).
  • Planning and developing new EMWA content and other educational offerings (e.g., seminars and webinars).
  • Contributing to the Freelance Section in the EMWA journal Medical Writing (MEW).
  • Optimising the Freelance Directory.
  • Providing networking opportunities virtually and in-person at EMWA conferences and beyond.
  • Anything else that is freelance-related within EMWA (website, newsletter, etc).

Get involved

All EMWA members interested in freelancing and networking with like-minded colleagues are welcome to join us. Please send an e-mail to freelance@emwa.org to receive the latest freelance information and an invitation to join our quarterly calls.

We are always looking for freelancers who would like to contribute to the Freelance Section in MEW, present at our Meet ’n’ Shares, conference sessions, or give standalone webinars on topics of interest for the freelance community. Please reach out if you have questions or suggestions.
